TNHPS Pre-Baseline Survey (PBS) 2018-19

As part of the Tamil Nadu Household Panel Survey (TNHPS), firstly, a comprehensive PBS listing survey was undertaken in the year 2018-19. The PBS surveyed a total of 2,12,282 households in the erstwhile 32 districts of Tamil Nadu across 1255 Primary Sampling Units (573 rural PSUs and 682 urban PSUs) in the state. A second phase of listing was carried out in 2021-22 covering an additional 38,857 households from 11 districts to accommodate for bifurcation and trifurcation of certain districts post-2018, taking the final PSU count to 1476 (685 rural PSUs and 793 urban PSUs). The PBS (2018-19), apart from serving as a listing survey, helped provide state and district-level estimates on important socio-economic and development indicators like education, employment, household income and infrastructure facilities.

Given the pandemic as well as delays in launching Census 2021, PBS provides the state with a comprehensive and updated pre-pandemic data on some major socio-economic indicators. It also provides the state with a robust database of around 2,12, 282 households from across the state for possible policy interventions.
